I got this tank for free with m 1985 9.9 Johnson. It has no numbers but appears to be really old. I'm trying to clean it with fresh gas and nuts and bolts and shaking it violently. I thought it was a non pressurized tank but after shaking it I took the cap offf and it blew off due to it being under pressue. There's no vent that I can find. I wanted to use it on my current motor but I won't be able to if it's a pressurized tank. I took some pics of the connection and the tank. Its the kind with the fuel level indicator in the top. Any ideas? Thanks in advance

No that's the connection you need. It only vents when you connect your line to it. If you look close there is a tiny pin that will push in as the connection is made. How the cleaning. I did one with a calf pulling chain inside and it came very clean. It started out with a good deal of rust. How does the motor run? Love them 9.9's Best of luck. Rick.

Thanks for the reply! I love the 9.9! I had it on GPS today at 21.5 mph with just me in a little 1430 jon boat! I'm just using a crappy 3 gal walmart plastic tank now. I guess I'm trying to picture how you cleaned yours with a calf, but I just don't know what you're talking about lol. I put a little less than a gallon in the tank this morning with some nuts and bolts and have been shaking it off and on all day. How much fuel should I have in the tank when shaking and also what about the pick up tube? Whats the best way to clean that? Thank so much for the help. I also want to repaint it and find original decals!

The important part is the chain, not the calf. It's a small chain with lots of small links. I never used fuel. I'd be too afraid of getting spark and well.... Can You Say "Pipe Bomb". I used very hot soapy water. So hot I had to wear gloves. Carb cleaner should take care of the fuel pick up and you can back flush it with compressed air. Rick.

Cool thank you! I think if I pull out the 4 screws that hold the sender and pick up tube down, I could just lift it all out and clean it that way right?

That should work. I'm a little troubled by the abuse the float must be taking with the tank cleaning. I can't honestly remember how that looks but if you can remove the float and pick up line while cleaning I think I would. Just had a thought. You could remove the whole assembly and patch the hole with duct tape while cleaning. Rick.

Don't worry about the float and pick-up filter screen. He's already destroyed them.
