Hi guys can someone please help me, I recently purchased this Johnson with no know history, but had good compression and after some fiddling and new parts it starts and runs fine, but no water came out of pee hole, so I removed lower drive unit replaced impeller and stringy gasket and rubber cups (old impeller looked good nothing broken) I also found that I could not blow through pee pipe so I removed it and with a hand pump seemed to remove the blockage, I then put the lower unit back on and started the engine in water but still nothing only exhuast fumes from pee hole, so I took leg off again checked I had assembled pump correctly and that impeller was still good and installed clockwise with the key in place. Then as a test I put lower unit in water and connected a drill to drive shaft turning it clockwise it pumps water and I can get it to squirt higher than the drill on drive shaft end (used rubber pipe no damage to drive shaft) I also put a hose pipe on mid section water pipe that feeds the power head with water and managed to get a small steady stream of water from pee pipe, put it all back together and run engine still nothing from pee pipe! So today took lower unit off again but have not taken apart pump did drill test using muffs and tank and it definitely pumps water when drill is turning at say around 2000 rpm but how much should it pump? I tried flushing from pee hole back and then from water pipe up and kept alternating between there does appear to be more water coming from pee hole now but only once water has been running for 10 - 15 seconds, I am just not sure if there is still a blockage I am sure there is a thermostat and I would have thought once the engine gets warm it will open allowing more water to pass around head will this affect pee hole volume? I don't think so but does anyone know? Shall I buy some central heating flushing agent and squirt it in pee hole? Is there any other test I can do to pump or pee hole? Any help greatly appreciated Jason.

It is common on the muffs to get a weak or delayed stream through the pee hole depending on the water pressure and volume you have available...

That being said and with everything you have done, I would recommend that you splash the motor at the nearest launch ramp and see how it does on the trailer with the engine sumberged like it is going to be when the boat floats..

Chances are you probably have no issues at all...

Even with the engine in the water it takes a while for all the air to purge out of the motor and get a good, steady stream (about 20 seconds or so on my 1978 70HP w/ tell-tale mod)....

Good luck...

The only way to check for water flow is with the lower in the water, tub or pond.
Some motors just will not work on muffs. Testing on muffs may only show that faucet pressure is there. No real test.

I went through the same thing with the same motor when I let it sit for a couple months. Did what you are doing now to no avail. In the end a dirt dobber had made a nest in there and blocked it from peeing. Now when I put it up I have a plug to keep them out.

Thanks everyone for your replies, when I have the lower unit in water submerged to anti cav plate or bottom of pump using the drill on drive shaft how much water should it pump do you think? Is there a possible measurment? I am getting water up but am thinking it may not be enough to reach the head. Also with a hose atached to water pipe inside leg that leads to head with water flow from hose on gental should I get water out of pee hole? Thanks Jason

Couple of things, did you install a new water tube grommet when you did the pump? Have you checked that the water tube is definately aligned and sealing with it? I have a very similar motor to yours (82 60hp rude) and i had the same problem as aesgator with the bugs entering the tell tale tube and blocking it with dirt from the plastic exit fitting to about halfway up the hose, remove it again along with the fitting and make sure both are clear.

Hello again, success at last, I removed the leg again took the pump apart but could not find anything wrong, so I push a copper wire up the water pipe to the head, quite a lot of times and worked it back and forth back flushing at same time from the pee hole back and I thought I notice a difference in the sound of the water, so kept flushing both ways for about 20 min and then reassembled the leg to the engine, my mate helped me lift in to the tank and just as I was tying to start it the water started to squirt from the pee hole, once running it squirts loads of water, good and constant and even more water as you raise the revs. Thanks everyone. J
