Hi everyone hope one of you guys can help. i am new to boating and have an issue with my Johnson 60 (1984) engine. i am not sure when the boat was last used so not sure if it has been stud. the engine runs on the hose pipe and goes into gear fine, but once lowered in to the sea it stalls when put in gear. I pulled the boat and took it home and placed it back on the hose where it run fine again. I have checked the Spark Plugs and they are fine i have also checked the compression 75psi on both cylinders. Not sure if this is relevent but when i had the carbs uncovered i ran the engine and covered one carb with my hand which was sucked into the carb and the engine then stalled. i started the engine again and covered the other carb and my hand this also was sucked in but the engine did not stall.

Can someone please shed any light on my problem as im really scratching my head. and worrying its going to cost me.

Cheers

Your symptoms sound like you are running on one cylinder, which will sound fine with no load on the engine.

You need to do a spark check with both plugs out, using a tester that will allow you to set a 7/16" gap. Look for a sharp blue spark.

You can usually buy an adjustable tester at most auto parts stores.

Hi Guys

Thought i'd give you an update, I followed your advice and stripped and cleaned the Carbs wgich was nice and easy, even though they looked clean i was shocked the amount of gunk that came out of the jets when the air hose was put on it. Was also shocked at the size of the jets on a Johnson. Anyway put everything back together and started up the boat started first time. i then did my hand test over the carbs like i did in my first post but this time when my hand covered the lower carb the engine Reved up which i took as a good sign, managed to get the boat in the sea at weekend and blow me it was like S**t of a Shovel. Problem sorted so thanks guys. Your info was a big money saver. So thank you for your time and posts and a great write up on how to clean carbs too

Thanks

Andy
