Johnson 60 Troubles...

Late 80's Johnson 60HP does not like switching in and out of gear (neutral to forward, nuetral to reverse) and also does not like sitting in nuetral for more than 10-20 seconds or so. Each time it bogs down and wants to stall out. When in gear, moving even fast idling it runs great and shows no signs of wanting to cut out or stall. I've messed with the idle screws some and got it where I would think it would be its best. I also messed with a little bit of timing, and it seemed to have gotten slightly better. But not enough to make a huge difference.

Carbs are super clean. I took them off and soaked them. Plus like I said...when in gear and running...the boat runs great.

Any suggestions guys?

bogging down in neutral might be a dirty carb. It should idle in neutral all day if need be. The shifting sounds like it might be a cable adjustment, but I am not sure if you are saying it dies when you put it in gear or it just doesn't want to go into gear. If it's dying I am back to dirty carb.

It will go into gear mostly every time. Just not nicely. Right when i move the control into gear, it wants to die if I dont quickly give it some more throttle. But its even worse trying to go into reverse, then back to neutral, and into forward.

I cleaned the carbs thoroghly. Took them off and soaked them in carb cleaner. Also have run a few cans of seafoam through it. You dont think it would be more timinin related? I know my throttle cables are extra long for my boat, so I just wrapped them up and tucked them neatly in the hull of the boat. But I wouldn't think that would have anything to do with it. Especially since it doesnt want to sit in nuetral and idle for very long.

Sounds like it could also be running rich at low idle if it's bogging, not just dying because of lack of fuel at low idle. Did you follow the carb adjustment per Joe's advice at http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=167352? You said you set the idle adjustment, but just making sure. Did you try pulling the plugs after it's idling a while and seeing if they're white (lean), black (rich) or a good light tan? When it's about to die, does pumping the fuel bulb keep it running? What does it do when you hit the choke and it's about to die? The mo' info the better.

Doesn't seem like it could be anything like plug wires or ignition if it's running good at other speeds, but I know from dirt bike experience that bad stators don't work at low rpms. Assuming that would also be the case with boats. I had a YZ 125 that wouldn't start with the kick starter, had to be roll started to get enough rpms to get it to fire. Shop replaced the stator and that fixed it. Not sure if that's your problem here. Do you have a manual for specs to test the stator? Not sure if at 800 rpms (idle) that a bad stator could give you trouble at that much rpm. Knowing what your plugs look like would be helpful though to try and isolate the problem.
