johnson 60 will only run with the muffs on

i gave a 1000 for the boat, its a 73 thunderrcraft 16ft runabout, its in good shape for the year. when i went to look at it he had the muffs on and it ran great. i know nothing about boats so i thought it was good to go. The first time i put it on water it ran good for about 15 minutes and then it started bogging and barely made it back to the trailer. i brought it home and changed the gas lines which were leaking and it started right up. i took it to a neighbors lake to try it out and the same thing again. has anyone had this problem or know what might cause it/

Not sure what year and model Johnson you have but I recommend a few maintenance items. If you are unsure the age of the fuel system change all rubber lines and external filters if equipped. Fuel line and filters are inexpensive, so is a good fuel pump and carb cleaning. I find that most of the time a poor running engine is due to poor fuel supply or crud from old lines getting pumped through the system.

If you have problems after cleaning out the fuel delivery system there are other items to look into.

sorry for the delay guys, the model number is 60esl-70d, i've been looking through the forum and found that it might be a compression issue. i havent messed with the boat since my first post. im gonna check the compression and let you guys know the numbers, i appreciate the replys. also, i changed the gas lines and checked the tank, everything is clean. i cleaned the carbs when i got the boat home, i also changed the plugs and checked the spark. it was firing but only after the key was released, was this way when i bought the boat, the key will crank it and as soon as youlet off it would fire up, dont really know what the issue is there but it starts right up.

You have a 1970 60hp.
I had one that was doing the same thing and it turned out to be a defective ign switch.
If you are going to maintain your own engine, I suggest you get the OEM manual. It will ansewer all kinds of questions and show you haw to test and repair your engine.

Any chance it got hot? In any case replace the water pump before you run it again.

I have the same issue with mine. In my personal opinion, chuck that engine and get another one I absolutely have had nothing but problems out of mine. Ive heard lots of members say its because they was made with a crappy ignition system and the points on these dudes are $56 a whack and thats if you can find them. Umm forget I said all that. "Hey I got a engine just like this ill sell you" lol

lol, no thanks, i think you might be right, im gonna try to find another outboard and then sale the boat, id like to have an inboard
