I am a Merc guy working on my first Johnson, that being said.....

What I have here is a 60HP Johnson VRO, Serial # A 7436027, Model # J60TLCUC.

Questions?

1.)Coming from the flywheel I see two sets of wires. One set has yel, yel/gry, brn and brn/yel. I imagine these are the stator wires (9amp? 16amp?). The yellow wires being for the charging system via the rectifier (or rect/reg?). The two browns are for the ignition. The other set has wht, purp, lgt green, and lgt blue. I imagine these are the trigger wires. The two brn stator wires along with the trigger wires run to module with a label CD3, is this the powerpack?

2.) I see two purple wires running from the wiring harness to a bus on the starboard side, are these just 12V ignition switches?

3.) I don't see any gry (tachometer) wires near the yellow stator wires. Where does the tach signal come from?

4.) What is the part # for the rectifier or rect/reg for this engine? The old one is definitely burnt out and will need a new one.

5.) What year is the motor?

-Thanks for the help in advance.
Andy

You are correct about the CD-3, and what those wires do. The purple wires are switched, 12 volts. The tach wire comes from the rectifier ylw, gr. The pick up lead is in the control box. The engine is a 87. 582399 is the part No. for the rectifier.

Re: Johnson 60HP VRO Questions?

Thanks for the part number.

As for the tach being the ylw/gry stator wire. I don't see how this ylw/gry connects to the grey tach wire. There is bus or multi-use terminal block on the starboard side of the engine. They the yellow stator wires connect at the top of the bus. Then a set of yellows from the rectifier connect on the same posts as the stators wires (and the red from the rectifier goes to the bottom of the bus). I don't see were the connections are for the tach, i.e. I don't see the grey tach wire connecting to the yellow/gry stator wire. Help

Thanks-
andy

Just making sure about part # 582399. I just looked it up and it says it is a voltage regulator and not a rectifier.
Quote:

"OMC VOLTAGE REGULATOR # 5708

VOLTAGE REGULATOR OMC 6-10 AMP 3 WIRE

OE # : 582399"

I am sure you are right, considering the picture of the item is exactly the same. Just wondering why it is a volt reg. and not a rectifier.

-andy

Re: Johnson 60HP VRO Questions?

My OMC parts manual calls it a rectifier. On the terminal block, there should be a solid gray wire to the same terminal as the ylw-gr wire from the rectifier. Maybe it has been removed. The control box is what holds the throttle lever, and key switch. There is a large black plastic box with cover over all three carbs, that is the air intake, or air silensor. On the control box, just below the key switch is a 3 prong, rubber connector, that is the tach plug-in.

Re: Johnson 60HP VRO Questions?

Many thanks R.Johnson. I think I am good from here. Are there any other things to watch out for on this motor? How's the oil injection system, reliable? Should I settle for a premix.

I seems to run well. The main reason it didn't run before was: Bad fuel, dead battery, hard as rock fuel line and the ground for the ignition coils was bad. It is amazing what people give away when they can't get it to run. I got this motor for free. After doing the above maintainance it fired right up.

Thanks-
andy

Re: Johnson 60HP VRO Questions?

Get a service manual. That will tell you how to verify if the VRO is working. Till then, run it on pre-mix.

Re: Johnson 60HP VRO Questions?

Ran a search to test VRO => sucessful. Do you happen to know the CID (49 or 56) in this engine?

-Thanks
Andy
