I have acquired an older 60hp V4 Johnson motor with model number WS-12R. What year is it? Also, the gearbox oil was mixed with water. I pulled the end cover off the prop shaft and only found 1 shaft seal in it. Surely there should be 2 seals there back to back?

Hello.
Yours is a 1967.
You must reseal your lower unit.It could be as simple as renewing the seals around the filling and drainage hole or the entire set.Best way to do it is to drain all the oil out and pressurise the lower unit to like 15 psi,but no more!!,stick it under water and see where the air bubbles come from. That's where you have to fix it.
I think there should only be one seal around the propeller shaft.
A good manual with lots of illustrations is a must.

Thanks for that. Have been trying to locate a good manual locally but nothing seems available here in New Zealand....
