I am replacing the gearcase head seal (#49-303345)(where prop shaft exits out from the gearcase) and the O ring. I have the gearcase head (#48 on the parts diagram) out and see the seal but cannot figure out how to remove it. I pryed it a little and it does not move. It is as if it is all one piece. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
NB Lower unit is from '64, 5.5. hp Johnson, upper is '67 6HP

Sometimes I take a small screw driver and tap it into the seal pushing toward the center hole. This will cause the seal circumference to slightly shrink and loosen in the hole. Be careful and don't scratch ot nick the case.

It is supposed to be "stuck" because it is a press fit into the gearcase head. The special tool will get it out...if you had one. Otherwise, whatever you can devise. I use an offset screwdviver that fits through the bore and the blade shoves the seal out. But you probably don't have one just like that either. A slide hammer tool also works, sometimes. "Shrinking" the seal probably is the best way. Or use a Dremel tool to carve the bulk of the seal away.

Whatever you do, don't break the thin aluminum seal bore of the gearcase head.
