Johnson 6hp - Bent Shift Lever

I have a 1979 Johnson 6hp. The shift lever on the side has been bent and even though it still works, it is rubbing and tearing the engine cover seal. I can't see a setscrew or anything else holding the handle to the shaft. Do I have to remove the entire shaft to replace the lever?
Any help will be much appreciated.

LakeFisher.... The shift handle is part of the shaft. You will need to remove the powerhead (no big deal on that engine) in order to replace it.

For those that might not know, when laying this type engine down in a vehicle to transport it, always lay it on the throttle handle. The throttle handle will take a beating, but obviously the shift handle does not.

Thanks Joe, I was too sheepish to admit that I transported the motor while laying it on the wrong side.
I picked up a Clymer manual and it says to remove the flywheel, carb, etc in order to remove the powerhead. I haven't taken a close look yet but why does the flywheel need to come off?

LakeFisher.... I don't have the slightest idea why those manuals (even OMC) go through that ritual. Obviously all that needs removing is the carburetor adjustment knobs, the vertical throttle linkage, the fuel line that leads to the fuel pump, and of course the screws that hold the powerhead on. Of course, the manual starter cord has to be secured.

Some of those manuals (larger engines) would have you completely remove the engine from the boat and dismantle God knows what simply to install a water pump...... Gotta Watch'em!
