1970 Johnson 6 HP stopped pumping water. It was pumping fine and then just stopped. Checked out the water pump and it all looked good. Impeller looked nearly like new. Sprayed water through all the outlets and inlets and it seems to be clear. Also checked with the thermostat out. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

Hi dstuard,<br /> Looks can be deceiving. If all the hoses are in good shape and connected then take a second look at the impeller. When was it changed last?Remove the water pump cover and turn the driveshaft by hand.Notice the impeller spin.Make sure the impeller key is in place. If impeller turning is evident, hold the impeller firmly and repeat process.Sometimes the metal bushing in the impeller breaks away from the rubber vanes(this happened to me once). If you suspect any problem, replace it.

Reel - I think you might be right on target. The key was in and holding but when I turned the fly wheel I did not hear that rubber on metal sound that I do with my other motor. Impeller is already ordered. I will let you know how it turns out.

New impeller and it is throwing out water like Old Faithful. I guess it shows that looks can be deceiving.
