Johnson 6hp motor fuel fitting does not shut off when disconnected

Is the fitting at the motor supposed to seal off when you pull the fuel line?

New to me '70 6hp. Runs great, no leaks at the fitting when the fuel line is connected, but when I pulled the fuel line, all the fuel in the line between the connector and pump dribbled out the fitting and into the back of my jon boat.

Is it normal that they dribble when disconnected? Is there a version that seals shut?

It may dribble a bit, but it shouldn't do it much as you described. Perhaps the ball vale is a little stuck within the fitting. Wore case scenario, you can get new fitting for about $10 and not have to fuss with it again.

I think the OP means the leak is from the motor.
Hard to picture how much fuel you are getting back....but some is normal.

If it is the fuel line fitting that is leaking after DX, the o-ring is replaceable.

sounds like the OP says the fuel from the connector to the bulb is dribbling out...which means its the hose fitting. and i agree it sounds like the spring plunger isnt shutting the connector off when dissengaged....the o ring is only to seal while connected to the motor.....andyway thats the way i look at it.

replace the fuel connector....and start fresh!

Sorry not to have been descriptive enough. The fitting on the fuel tank hose shuts off fine and does not leak. The fitting on the engine dribbles maybe a tablespoon? when I pull the fuel line. I took the engine fitting off to see if there was a seal or something that needed replacing, but the connector (has the four cross drilled holes on the end) has no internal valve at all. Just a through hole. I could see daylight through the fitting when I looked in the end that goes to the fuel pump. My Clinton engine has a valve that stops all but a drop or two from leaking. Since the OMC has no valve I figure either my "new" engine is missing it or that they never had it. So if I order a new one, will it have an internal valve on the engine fitting just like the fuel tank hose has? Thank you for the replies. Sandor

I'd say that is normal...for an OMC of that size and vintage.

I saw the same "dribble" on a 1976 6hp. recently...this one was in exceptional shape , so it may be as Tim stated...normal

The newer fittings have a little *** on the end of them to prevent this. Check with a BRP dealer. OMC called them "drip less" fittings.
