Hi all, got a Johnson '69 6hp Sea Horse wich jumps out of gear only in forward position. The motor has always been spare motor so not too much turning hours. The strange thing is that I can switch from N to F and then push it about half an inch further wich makes it not jumping out of gear anymore but I have to hold it in that position otherwise it moves back to "jumping position". Could there be anything worn at the shift rod connector? In reverse all works great however it switches fairly quick from N to R and sometimes it stays half in reverse if switched back to N. Please help. Prop is fine by the way!

yes it could be the connector. the bolt not thru the indention of the lower shift rod. so it does not pull the shift rod all the way up for forward.

I would take a look at the controls. There is a spring and ball to hold into F-N-R and the spring could be broke not allowing it to stay in F.

Thanks! I'll check on the connector! How do I separate the lower from the upper rod? Can I remove the lower unit to reach the connector?
The spring is working fine, the lever stays in position but can be pushed half to 3/4 of an inch further down.
