Have 1967 Johnson 6hp that I resurrected and am using on a 10' Grumman aluminum jon boat of ancient vintage. A few questions:

1. Should this combination plane?

2. Engine runs fine, but when adjusting low speed needle valve for best running, needle valve is closed all the way. Have rebuilt carb, checked float height, made sure all gaskets replaced and in place. Any suggestions?

3. What is best way to adjust timing and carb/timing synchronization? Seems to me that adjusting point gap is a bit crude. Where can I get the timing tool that fits on crank for this purpose?

4. Any ideas for tiller extension so I can sit in middle of my boat and so balance its trim?

Many thx for any help. You guys have been great helping me in motor's initial resurrection.

Bednick

Re: Johnson 6hp

Welcome to Iboats!
1. It ought to.
2. Check the fuel pump for leaks - remove it from the engine block and pump up the primer bulb. If any fuel leaks from the back, it's bad. If that's not it, then try pumping the primer bulb while the engine is running - does it have any effect at all? When you rebuilt the carb, did you replace the thick, washer shaped gasket over the main jet/emulsion tube?
3. Adjusting the point gap to .020 works out pretty good. If you want to be deadly on, try this:
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=033290#000001
(that's for a big-twin but you'll see the same sorts of marks on your 6hp. You don't need to bolt town the flywheel for each adjustment, so long as you don't start the engine. Easiest to crank it with the plugs out.)
4. Search this forum and "Outboard Non-Repair Topics" for "tiller extension" - you're not the first! :)

Hope that helps!

Hiya,

just a bit more input...

as for planning. I use 2 different 6hp's, both are 70's models. One of them (my Dad's) will easily plane a 12' aluminum boat, even with 2 adults in it. With one adult it pushes it very smartly. The other, barely planes a 12' aluminum boat even lightly loaded. Both run great, but I think the difference is that my Dad's has a standard 3 blade prop on in it, while mine has the "weedless" 2 blade. I think they're both marked as the same pitch, but I think the regular prop is just much more efficient. I use mine for trolling on a bigger boat 99% of the time, so it's no big deal to me.

I've wanted to switch the props around and see if the performance reverses, but it's not that easy... the motors stay at 2 different lakes, so I've never gotten around to it.

getting or putting together a longer gas line would help the weight thing... then you can put the tank as far forward as possible. Or you could always get an 80lb lab to act as ballast!

Seriously, making a tiller extenstion wouldn't be a big deal. I'd try about a 2' piece of 1 1/2" PVC pipe. Cut 2 or 3 slots maybe 2 or 3" long lengthwise at one end. Slip over the twist grip and add a hose clamp or 2 to tighten it on... Never tried it, but I imagine it'd work. I've seen this type of thing made out of steel... both homemade and commercially made ones. For a little 6 hp, PVC might be good enough (?).

TYVM guys.

The PVC tiller extension sounds great. Problem is that tiller is on angle and longer extension puts end of extension outside gunwale. Maybe some kind of universal joint of flexible tubing?

Paul:

It was new fuel pump. But I WILL test it as you suggest. How would this make needle valve act as I describe?

I was careful to make sure that thick gasket was replaced.

BF: my motor has 2 blade 8x7 1/4 prop. How much for another prop, and where is best(cheapest) place to get it?

Fuel tank is only 2 1/2 gal, so not too heavy, but will try relocating it with longer hose.

Bruce, send me a picture of the prop that you have on there. I have a couple of extra 3 blade props, and I'll send you one for free. You can pay the shipping, if you're concerned about it. I can't send it until about the 27th, though. I'm in the Navy, and indisposed at the moment. You can find my email in my profile, under webpage.
