Johnson 7.5 Question

I have a 1955 or so 7.5 Hp Johnson that ran fine, but needed a water pump. After replacing the water pump there was water pouring out the bottom of the tube that runs across both cylinders. Is this tube supposed to be plugged at the bottom like it is at the top with some sort of casting plug? If so the person that had it before must have dome something to lose that plug. Here is a pic of what I am taking about.
The bottom of that tube is open and water pours out.

Re: Johnson 7.5 Question

Your motor is a 1956-58. Post your model number.

There is a welsh plug that goes in there. They sometimes deteriorate. You can get a new one from your local dealer.

??? It looks like it is broken at about 8 o'clock from the spark plug???

Anyway, yes there are core plugs that go in those holes. They rot out.

it is supposed to be plugged. Are those head bolts that are that loose?

Re: Johnson 7.5 Question

The bolts are loose because I removed the head to make sure the gasket wasn't leaking. I will try to locate a plug and a new head gasket. I did notice that the other tube was broken, but it was sealed off with some substance. I will give it a try before I start looking for another head.

Does anyone know what size those welsh plugs are?
