Hello guys ????. I have used the search but cant find what I?m looking for.
Here in the UK I have a 1997 Johnson 70 remote which power my 18ft motor cruiser.
I cant give you anymore info about the engine as the serial number plate is missing (probably because the engine is ex RNLI), however, several of the parts within the engine have 1997 stamped on them and the previous owner let me have the 1995 ? 1998 2-70hp Clymer shop manual.
The engine runs great but I just get the occasional stall which I believe is due to the idle being too low ???. It currently is 750rpm in neutral, so I am guessing it must drop to 700 ? 750 when in forward gear and in the water. When I say occasional stall ???.. it probably stalls just once each time we go out, but restarts immediately.
It pushes the boat along at 26kns (WOT) and comes out the hole pretty quick???.
I have decided to raise the idle to about 800 rpm which should fix the stalling problem problem, however, the shop manual is not clear on how this is done.
In one part of the shop manual it mentions that the idle speed is controlled by the idle timing ??? which is adjusted by a screw just under the flywheel. I have had a look and I can find the main timing adjust screw which is just in front of the starter motor and under the flywheel, but I cant seem to locate the idle timing screw.
However, another section of the shop manual also mentions an idle stop screw on the throttle linkage ???? but hey, I cant find that either???.
As a point of interest my ?on the side business? is rebuilding & tuning American V8 for the classic / kit guys over here ????.. currently sat in the workshop ready for rebuild and to keep me going over the winter months are a Ford 302ci, Windsor 351W (marine), and a 1976 Pontiac 326 ?????.. yet I cant work out how to adjust the idle on a 70hp outboard !
