I have a 1974 johnson looper 70 Hp, and read in the shop manual to use "sea lube" in the gearcase. I have no idea what that is. It also says in case "sea lube" is not available, to use DEXRON ATF. Is this normal to use ATF in the lower end? This is with the hydraulic shift assist unit. If not atf, can you use regular 80/90 gear oil in it? Thanks

I use type "C" fluid from a local automaotive store in both my early 70s hydroelectric drives. It is 75W. If you use something too heavy it may not shift properly. I have heard other say they use heavier oil without a problem but if you can get type "c" use it.

ATF is for in case the proper oil is not available. They have to give you an option or they have to give you the oil. Otherwise, use the right stuff. Type C is an obsolete term still used by aftermarket vendors. BRP/Johnson/Evinrude now calls it "Premium Blend Gearcase Oil". It is required in electric shift motors, but I am not so sure about the hydraulic assist motors. Check with a dealer to make sure. Or check the Evinrude website.

I used Castrol Synthetic 75W-90 gear lube (made for marine use) for 5 years in my '73 Johnson with no issues. Got it at Pep Boys.

I appreciate all your advice. I think the lighter weight 75/90 would be better, as it will circulate at cooler temps, considering that the lower end is submerged in cool water while operating. I live in rural kentucky, far from the adviceof knowledgable engine men. This forum is the greatest! Ill be going up to columbus ohio this weekend and check out whats available.
