Can anyone please help me. I recently purchased an older boat with a 1980 johnson 70 hp seahoarse.
all was fine until a sudden loss of power on the weekend. the boat seemed to miss a few times then stalled.I pulled the cover off and noticed a red wire going to the rectifier was corroided/ burned off completly could this have anything to do with the miss/loss in power ? any help would be appriciated thank-you.

Hey hoocher, welcome to the forum.

The rectifier going out should not effect the engine running. All the rectifier does is turn ac power into dc power for battery charging. What it does sound like to me is that you lost spark. This can occur in several ways. Most likely your power pack decided you was having to much fun and went out on you. Or, the power coil under the flywheel which is part of the stator has opened. Finally, the timer base could have failed. This is also under the flywheel. The timer base is the least likely to go bad. Finally, there could be a problem in the key switch or emergency stop circuit. To check for spark, rig a short rod into one of the spark plug boots and set the rod close to an engine ground. Crank the engine and see if a spark jumps across the gap. Do this with both leads. If there is no spark, then there is a problem in the ignition system.
