While i was using the boat on the weekend, i was operating at some speed in choppy water; I felt the water exiting the tell-tale and thought it was reasonably hot (in my opinion it was about the same temp as a good hot bath).

1. Is this normal?

2. Does anyone know what the operating temperature is for a 1975 85hp Johnson (85ESL75)?

3. Can i run the motor at WOT for a long period?

4. Does the motor have a temperature sensor to protect itself or how will i know if its getting too hot?

Temp should be about 140 (if memory serves), so you're dead on. By the way, that motor didn[t come stock with a tell-tale, so someone must have added it.

The motor is designed to run WOT 24x7, if it's properly tuned & in decent mechanical shape.

There's a temp sensor on the starboard head. Ground the lead to it, and the horn in your remote control should sound.
