Problem: Twice now after running the motor on dry dock (my driveway on trailer), after shutting down the engine, letting the water drain, waiting about an hour later, a small pool of oil comes oozing out of the exhaust at the prop, black and thick. Never saw this before. Removed the prop and do not see oil coming off the shaft at the outer seal, I figure it's further back. I know a bench pressure test should be in order. Any other suggestions or techniques before the bench test?

It could just be normal left over oil dripping out of the exhaust from the prop! Thru Hub exhaust!! If not,It could only be, the Seal, The Drain/Fill screws leaking or a Crack in the housing. Pressure check is in order! Check lower unit fluid and see what condition it's in. Is it Creamy looking. Normally, a puddle of Lower Unit fluid would not be Black, but more of a Tan color!

tmann,<br /> Are you heavy handed with the Fuel/oil ratio? The 88 spl at idle will not burn all the oil/gas mixture and sometimes it builds to the point where it will carry out of the exhaust. Just a thought I always poured heavy thinking more oil is better but not always there is a point where it becomes a problem.

Agree with above. My 91 88SPCL does same thing. It's always a good idea to check oil in lower unit, just in case.
