johnson 88 spl gearcase

I rebuilt my lower unit recently (put in forward,reverse,and pinion gears).whenever i took it out to try it it gave me a sudden knocking sound in the lower unit.it does this especially at the beginning of throttle well before the boat is planed out.whenever i am planed out and running about full speed it does not make this noise need help

Hi, Did you shim the gearcase when you rebuilt it?

Doghunter,<br /> You didn't ask me but I'll tell you what you need to do this. It's a special tool called a universal shim guage that OMC put out. The only shimming necessary for that year was to shim the pinion gear. If you changed all the gears with new I would suspect a bad bearing causing that knock.<br />Lots-a-luck
