Need some direction on this problem. Just got the boat out of the shop about a month ago... has ran good for 4 outings but on the 5th having a hard time starting... one thing driving me nuts is the starter, you crank it.... soon as one piston fires the starter drops. Bought this motor used and always had a very hard time getting it started but once going, runs great. have had the entire engine checked out... carbs rebuilt, every ounce of the fuel system replaced. Complete tune up... all done professionaly and they gave it a good bill of health. I think it would start better if the starter would stay engaged for just a while longer to help get it going. Checked compression, sparking, timing, fuel mix, linkage.. all seems to be good.

Any ideas.... anyone?

My advice is to replace he starter. The bendix spring is probably weak. If you can't find one at a reasonable price then check out www.rnkhomebase.com and leave him a message. He can find some unbelievable parts at times. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Before you go replacing expensive parts, it's much easier to just actually troubleshoot a little bit. First off what is your starting procedure? You should be using the following one:

1. Pump the primer bulb up good and hard
2. Turn the key on, not start, just turn it on
3. Push the key in for 8 seconds, count it out
4. Turn key the rest of the way to start

Do all 4 of these while in Neutral, try not to use the fast idle lever. It should start pretty easy when cold using this procedure, if everything is in good shape.

If your bendix still kicks down real easy before you get it started, try using the fast idle lever slightly.

Like to thanks all for helping out on this issue... Learned that pushing in the key is not a choke but more of a primer, also found out the fast idle lever really wasn't moving the carb any. Slight linkage adjustment and little learning on how things operate... engine starts great now...

Thanks again... I love you guys... I could almost cry.. BUT I WON'T!
