Changed my water pump (rebuilt it) over the weekend. Very easy, thanks to the info here. I was very surprised to find that the 10 year old impeller was still like new. Soft, flexible, no scratches cracks or anything. The cup was shiny no wear or rubber. There were a couple of o-rings that had gone away somewhere. The only problem I had was I had a bolt fused to my foot. It was the 5/8" bolt behind the prop, not the one under the trim tab. It broke off. after sawing, drilling, beating and trying 2 different easy outs for an hour, I decided to leave it. I still have 5 bolts holding the foot on. All in all without the bolt problem the next time it will be a less than an hour job.

There must be a reason why they use that one heavier bolt at that location. Is there now any eze-out broke off in the bolt. The man who came up with the eze-out should have been condemned to go through life trying to use one.

AGREED !!....LOL

EASY_OUT "Never Easy and Rarely Out" !!

Can you still get to it to fix it On the boat ? Spray it with PB Blaster ( Best darn penetrating Oil there is!) . And do it several times.

Is there anything at all sticking out or is it broken off flush? If the Easyout is not broke off in it you can get a left hand drill bit from the local hardware and try drilling it that way (Backwards) Many times it will come out while drilling it.....

I think my 88SPL is having the same problem, It doesn't pee very much. Although it never gets hot either...From what I have read, these are great motors and nearly bulletproof !

I drille a hole straight through it. It wasnt easy drilling. Sprayed PB blaster in the hole. beat, banged, tapped, twisted mor PB (repeat x 10) no avail. I did noth have the nerve to hit it with a torch. The bolt broke with about 1 inch sticking out. couldnt get vice grips to budge it so I sawed it off and commensed with the hole drilling. I will just have to keep tabs on the remaining bolts and tighten as needed. This motor has been bullet proof. I changed the pump for peace of mind, but boy does it pee a stream now!, it shoots it about 3" below the water surface. I showed the old impeller to a friend, he said that being that old and in such good condition tells you that the shaft is in perfect balance. I dont know? but it sounds reasonable to me.
