I have a 73 9.5hp that just can't seem to pull itself out of the water. Carb has been cleaned, new points, times and new plugs. Seams to get slower everytime I take it out. I use a leadfree high octane fuel mixed at 50:1

Bear, yep tried that with no response. could the timing de retarded? and if so how do I advance it.
I can't seem to see where the TDC mark is to line up the points marks on the flywheel.

Kiwiguy,This is not your problem but:: if your
motor calls for regular you are wasting your money
running high octane. It is actually harder to burn hightest.Especially if your motor is designed for regular.
Hit the choke and see what happens.Did you lube the rubbing block on the points?Does it start and run right otherwise?Hows the compression? Is the float level too high or too low?Try spraying WD40 in the carb while under way.

Steelespike,
Thanks for the info about the level of octane. I always thought the higher the octane the better the burn.. see what happens when you ask the right people !!!! I'm gonna put you in my will... :D

G'Day, Kiwiguy.

I agree with what Bear and S'Spike have offered.

I know you have changed a bunch of parts, but that is not an efficient way to troubleshoot.

First, find out if both cylinders are making power. Pull each plug wire when at idle. A dead cylinder will cause no drop in rpm. If you have a dead cylinder check the spark. It should make a hot, blue spark about 1/2" to the block.

If both cylinders are making power, do the Linkage and Synchronization procedure in your manual. That will ensure that it is properly timed and that the throttle linkage is properly adjusted.

Still no improvement? Pull the flywheel. Check that the woodruff key is installed and not broken.

Let us know what you find. :)
