Johnson 9.5 runs backwords

Hi. I'm asking for my brother, Who jest gut an older Johnson 9.5 rebilt. he had to get a prop for it. It ran nice in 55gl drum.this weekend put it in the river started it up put it in drive and the boat ran backwords? put it in revorce it ran forword but at reduce rpm's. like it was backing up.<br /> Help<br /> Sam for Brother Fred

Hi Sam,<br /> It may be the shift rod that goes to the lower unit(connected wrong at the L.U.).You have to remove the lower unit,put it in the correct gear to correspond to the gear shifter,and reassemble.Others here can give more specified instructions.Please give the year/serial number of the motor.

I do not know, but just a possible cause, you say a new prop was put on, could it possibly have been a reverse prop? <br />Another good question, is if a reverse prop was accidentally put on what would happen (would directions be reversed)? Seems so to me, as that is what happens with aircraft props.<br />Walt :D

Hey someone who knows/is experienced, if a reverse prop is used will it run backwards (I would think so) :D ?

I would like to thank every one for there help.<br />After checking it out we found that it was the prop.hay I didn't know thay made them that way.<br /> <br /> Sam

The correct prop (on all OMC full gearshift models) is right hand rotation...<br />- Scott
