Hey folks,

I have a possible trade deal working. I currently have a 86 evirude 2 stroke 8hp motor for my Gheenoe highsider. I am looking to trade for a 9.9 2003 Johnson 4 stroke. Should I just keep my 8hp or move up to the 9.9 4 stroke? Whats everyones opinion? I dont need speed unless I am on a lake or big river. I use this gheeno to trout fish on TN tailwaters. whats the weight difference between the motors? What does the Johsnon weigh?

Thanks,

Shudy

At 95 lb., the 9.9 weighs about 30 lb. more than your older 8hp. I'd think that on a Gheenoe would be significant. You know your boat much better than I do, though.

30 pds is a significant amount of weight on the back of the Gheenoe. I was hoping that it would only be about a 15-20 pds difference. I think the yamaha, nissan, and merc 4 strokes are lighter but this deal I may have going is not making me spend anymore money. I may just keep my 8hp and be done with it. Thanks for your advice.

Yeah, and to gain just 2 hp, I don't think it makes a lot of sense. I imagine that the 8hp you have on there pushes your boat pretty well, since it's 80% of the max hp for it.

I don't know how you transport your Gheenoe, but if involved taking off and putting on the outboard, a 95 lb outboard is a heckuva lot harder to deal with than the 58-60 lb of your 8hp.

Personally, I think it would be a wash between the two outboards as far as performance is concerned. Maybe a couple of mph.

Yeah I understand what you're saying. I had a 9.9 on the boat prior to getting the 8hp. I can tell the difference speed wise between the two. My concern is do I need an extra 2hp for the weight I am carrying? I dont have to take the motor off and on but maybe just every once in a while so that part isnt a concern for me. My uncle weights 250 and sits in the front and I weigh 210. So is 2 more hp going to help that much? I may just go with a jack plate and doel fin to help with lift on the boat and get the motor running just right. Thanks for your advice!
