From what I can see your serial number is from 1967. DL-12 isn't a good model number, but LD-12 is a 1967 5 hp. A 1967 Johnson is white up top and green down below. No 9.9 hp parts will interchange with a 1967 5 hp. The 1960's 5 hp transom bracket with not interchange with 6 hp models. Perhaps your motor shares parts from other years. Can you post a photo?

That is definately a 9.9 hp. Looks to be circa 1979.

1977 or newer for sure. 77 is when Johnson's where painted white, instead of green and white. From what I see, it looks like a long shaft (20") and not a SailMaster (25"). Though the picture is a too small for me to be sure.

Look on the transom clamps and see if the model number is there as well.

Hum, I don't see the pictures, must be "me". I had a 1986 Johnson 9.9 HP. It was all white and the top cover seemed to my eye to be too low/small. There is no mistaking a 5hp for a 9.9 hp, the 9.9 hp is two cylinder and not so for the 5 hp (I believe... now that I've typed it I must admit I am not sure).

The pix are there. The very tiny box at the beginning of the original post. I was also gonna say I couldn't find em at first also until I did. And the 5hp was a 2 cylinder. As was the 3 hp... and the way earlier 2.5 hp...all 2 cylinders...

Looking at it some more, with careful comparison, I will say that it is 99% likely to be a long shaft. There should be a tag on the transom clamps (where it does indeed attach to the boat) that will have the model and serial number. Also, look on the powerhead for a silver disc shaped plug. That should also have the serial number, and sometimes the model number too. What does the tiller handle look like? Is there a kill switch somewhere on the handle? That will help narrow down what year this motor is.

Check out this website too for more info:

With the kill switch being on the motor cover, and not on the handle, that tells me that the motor is between 1977-1985. Maybe even an early 1986. In late 86 they changed the kill switch position to the end of the tiller handle. I agree, it is a heavy motor, my least favorite one to carry around.
