Johnson 9.9 Won't Rev Up (ignition?)

I have a 1992 Johnson J10RENA. I've been through just about everything I can think of on this motor (except the ignition.) It will start and idle like a limo all day long. Great for trolling. It just won't rev beyond ~1500 rpm, even at WOT. It just kinda bogs and stumbles.

The carb is clean with a new kit. Fuel pump is rebuilt. New water pump, and the list goes on. Compression is very healthy and even. With spark plugs pulled and grounded, I get a healthy "snap" with a strong blue spark, so the coils are fine.

Question--how do I check the timing advance on this motor? (I don't have a manual yet.) I have a timing light, but can't find a pointer or marks on the flywheel. It acts like the timing is always retarded (like at idle) and never advances with the throttle. I'd like to do a little more diagnosis before spending ~$150 on a new ignition module.

Hints???

Thx.

Sounds like the timing and carb are out of synch. A link-n-synch is what you need if that's the case. A factory service manual will tell you how to do that, or a good boat mech would work, too. Had one done on my Merc 500 years ago after pulling/cleaning/reinstalling the carbs myself...wouldn't get out of it's own way. $50 later it was making 28 mph again. Uh, just noticed in your post that it's a 92 model...none of this applies if you have no carb, obviously.

Same guy, different login. When I rebuilt the carb, I also did the link-n-sync. I also had to replace the little roller that opens the butterfly valve as it follows the cam on the stator plate. I have it set so that the roller just starts to engage when aligned with the mark on the stator plate.

Anybody with any suggested methods to check ignition timing advance on this motor with a timing light? What are the proper settings at idle and at WOT?

WOT is the only setting that matters, the timing should be stated on the motor somewhere.
