Johnson 9.9hp Saildrive

My 1992 Johnson 9.9hp Saildrive outboard will not idle. So far I have installed a new carburettor, and checked that the fuel pump is working. The engine starts easily on choke and will run at high revs but dies when the speed is reduced. Can anyone help?

Ahoy, Ayo.<br /><br />I suspect that your engine only needs a "link 'n' sync" adjustment procedure. <br /><br />That procedure adjusts the carb linkage for idle speed and wide open throttle, then synchronizes the throttle with the ignition timing.<br /><br />Other possibilities are poor compression and leaking reed valves.<br /><br />Any of several manuals available that cover your engine will give you step by step instructions.<br /><br />You should start with a compression test.<br /><br />Good luck .
