I'm fairly new to boating & need some information as to where to go & find what I need. I have just purchased a used Johnson 2000 90 HP with t/t that has the VRO setup on it & it's mounted on a 1999 CREST Fisherman DL 22 footer. It has been sitting around for about a year. Is there any place I can go on the web to find out what compression "should" be & other data about the engine? Any help would be appreciated. The only thing I know of right now that is not working is the tach. The previous owner told me it stopped working so I'm looking for some information as to how to check it out. Any advice in starting it up the first time since it's been sitting for so long? Thanks

You'll look for even compression numbers. E-rude says that on "V" motors the compression may vary between the port and starboard side but the average from each side should not vary more than 15 lbs. You'll hear a lot about a 10% variance but 15 lbs is what E-rude says. Now, that is assuming the heads are a matching set. It's not unusual on some older motors to find a mismatched set. That may throw the numbers off a bit.

If the wiring is OK on your tach the most common cause of a tach not working is a bad regulator or regulator / rectifier. If you battery isn't keeping a proper charge that's likely the issue. You motor has a water cooled reg/rect. Left unfixed you could run the risk of the wiring burning up on the reg/rec. Not likely but possible.
