I have a Johnson 90hp VRO. I believe pre-1989 (there is no serial number plate) but it does have 2 seperate power packs.

The motor started but not getting any spark on the starboard side cylinders. I thought it was the powerpack, but i switched the powerpack with the port side and i still got no spark on starboard and did get spark on port. So both powerpacks are tested to be OK. I then reswitched the powerpacks back and now have no spark.

After the boat sits for a little bit I get spark back. This is not a heating issue as I didn't have the motor running when I lost spark, just turning over checking for spark for a 1 sec burst every 3-4mins.

How do I check the stator and timer base??

Thanks,

Brandon

Re: Johnson 90hp VRO no spark

Based on what you said about switching the power pack, I'd run through all the connections especially grounds. i fixed a bad coil just by removing it and reinstalling it. Included in the process is that your battery negative is pliers tight; the thumb screws are just a mean trick.

I also think your stator/timer base is a good question, but may as well try the other, too. I'm not qualified on that part of the motor, though

Yea me either! I will triple check all connections but it seems to be an issue that comes and goes. I guess I'll pay a mechanic to come look at it :(

The ignition system is quite simple really. You have the powerpacks, which you have swapped and the problem did not follow. So, check all of the connections in the connectors. Broken wires, pushed out pins not making contact Hint, if the problem is on the one side. You have switched the packs, then it is most likely the connectors on the side of the engine without spark that are suspect first. You have connections from the stator to charge the powerpack, and the trigger to fire that charge. You check both of those components if your connections are okay.

Sorry I don't have the information at hand to help you. Try and find a manual. You can do an ohms check which will likely show you were the problem lies. Good luck :)

Go to CDI Electronics.com and look up the trouble shooting procedures.
