johnson 90hp what year

I have just purchased a johnson 90hp VRO(not connected) I was told it was a 1990 model (by the seller). I Really have many questions, but will start at these ones. What year is it?, the model # J90TLCRD, serial # 703226. What year were they re rated from the fly wheel to the propellor? What rpm do they like to rev at?(WOT). Any info would be good.

A J90TLCRD is a 1984. The horsepower ratings were changed about that time. The changes for all models didn't occur the same year, but over 2-3 years. I suspect yours was rated at the flywheel, but someone else may know differently.

I'll let someone else weigh in on the max RPM, but I would suspect it would be around 5800.

Hi Is there any way of knowing if it is flywheel or prop rated. The people who fitted motor to boat said it is a crossflow. Thanks boatBuoy I was told the same for revs. The revs I am getting are only 4000-4200rpm. Am worried I may be doing damage to O/board.
