Hey guys,

Will the new Johnson/Evinrude Grease work as the old OMC Type A grease for my 9.5 HP Johnson 9R71R? Also, will any marine grease gun work/fit the grease points pointed out in the original owners manual or do I need a OMC Grease Gun?

Thanks!

Re: Johnson 9R71R Grease

The little grease receivers on at least the smaller OMC's aren't really the standard grease nipples that are found on cars and such although there are a couple of proper grease nipples on most OMC's. I found a little grease applicator at Canadian Tire Hardware that fits the small receivers very well and you just push on the handle and it pushes grease into the fittings. The thing looks much like a multi screwdriver except the whole handle is filled with grease. It's not marine grease but I'm not worried about that as grease is grease when it comes to linkages and cowl latches etc. The first time i grease a new to me outboard I take a small drill bit and turn it into those small fittings by hand just to remove dry grease and get the passage ready to take new grease. Sometimes if they don't open I run a wd40 spray into them which helps loosen the dried grease. I do use marine grease in my grease gun so any fittings it fits properly get marine grease. Hope that helps a little. Best of luck. Rick.

Tell ya a little secret. I must have sold a ton of that old OMC type A. In retrospect, it wasn't all that great. The newer stuff that later came out is MUCH better. There are other options for real good grease. Merc, Yamaha, etc all have their brand that works well.

A standard Zerk gun will sort of work on those cast fittings. The best kind had a rubber seat that pressed against the fitting. Havent seen one of those in years. But I haven't been looking for one either, since I still have my old rubber one. Try a chainsaw dealer. Tehy used to have a gun that had a point that stuck into the grease hole on guide bars. Haven't shopped for one of those lately either.
