I have a 2003 Johnson Bombadier 50 Hp Four-Stroke. I am converting it froma tiller handle to a consule drive. I got the wire harness I needed and the new control box. I got everything hooked up, but I have no warning horn. I tested the horn with 12-volts and it sounds but when I start the motor It does not do a 1/2 second beep. does anyone know if I could short out a overheat sensor to test? and where they are located? Any info will help.

The horn with the test at startup has three wires. Is that what you have?

There should be a disconnect on the tan wire at the cylinder head. If you ground the control end of the wire with the ignition in RUN, the horn should sound.

No the one I have only has two wires, a purple and tan one I believe. Is that how I test this one?

If you have only the two wires, yours isn't a self-test. The only way you can test it is to ground the temp sender back at the head.

How do I know which one to ground out. I am pretty sure the one I was playing with was the temp sensor and I shorted the two pins out but nothing. So my motor should not beep on startup?

Some of the controls with two wire horns had a slot that you could insert a extra key in to test the horn. What control are you using?

The traditional wiring is with the purple wire to the ignition switch for positive, and tan wire running to the engine temperature switch for the ground.

I have the BRP control box #5006180, I didn't see any key spot. I am almost a 100% sure the horn would sound if I grounded the brown wire since i had 12 volts on the purple wire.

I am sure the horn should sound if you gound the tan wire anywhere along the circuit, but you want to know if the wiring is good back to your temperature switch on the engine.

Your engine has Suzuki wiring and I am not familiar with the color codes. If you ask on the Suzuki forum, someone can give you more information.

The control is OMC/BRP and the horn shown for it is 176360, which is two wire.

So I need to locate the temp sensor on the engine and ground the tan wire on it? Will the wire still be tan?

The Suzuki Column in the CDI Troubleshooting chart, (page 6) may help with the engine wiring.
