Johnson Boys Need Your Help

Hey,
I have been boating for years, but started off and always had inboards. Got a great deal on a fishing boat with a 135 HP Powershift 2. Pulled it home put the muffs on it?would not go. Changed out the plugs, turned the key and it fired like a champ. Ran for a couple of minutes and I was keeping my eye on the exhaust to see the tell tale sign of water trickeling out?nothing. I shut down immediately.

Now here come the stupid questions
1) The water outlet on this motor should come out with the exhaust gas right?
2) I never let it run very long, no alarms sounded but the head was uncomfortably hot to the touch ( Did I not give it enough time)
3) Before I drop the bottom end and check the impeller on the pump I though of a fast test tell me if I am Right.
4) Look at the pic I attached. The two hoses that I point to in red. Are they the input hoses or the output hoses? Because I took one off and no water.
5) My thought is if they are the input hoses, (first pull the plug wires off and turn off the fuel) I could turn the water on the muffs Undo one of the hoses and turn the motor over. If water comes out?pump is working. If they are the output hoses then maybe thermostat? Please look at the pic and respond with any thoughts. Thank you in advance.

Those two hoses are the T-stat hoses, the thing they connect to on the other end, under the bubble back exhaust housing is the T-stat housing, your T-stats are in there, and not fun to get to.

If you are looking for water to be coming out of the two holes at the bottom of your pic, actually where the other end of the red lines point to, under the engine pan, you won't see much when running it on the muffs. Those are the exhaust pressure reliefs, water and exhaust will come out of them when the engine is in the water and there is back pressure on the exhaust coming out of the prop. It doesn't look like you have separate tell-tale on that old of a motor, but you should see plenty of water coming out of the prop and some other places on the lower unit.

OMC's generally run around 140 degrees or so, rule of thumb is that you should be able to keep your finger on the head for about a 3 second count before you have to take it off, but it should take a few minutes to get to the temp, especially on the muffs with the engine cover off.

If I were you I'd drop the lower unit and put a whole water pump kit in, just to be safe and so you know it's new. It's not hard or expensive.

I am going thru the same thing you are with a very similar motor (1974 Johnson 115HP). In fact I just had a post almost exactly the same as yours.

I ordered an impeller and am going to install it when it arrives. I have never replaced an impeller and would like to hear how yours goes if you get yours done before I do. According to my factory service manual I need several special tools. I guess I am just going to try and improvise because I've never heard anyone saying they needed the tools.

Sorry Again the model # is 135ESL74B
Does anybody have a quick test/trick to figure out safely if the impeller is pumping water without dropping the bottom end.

The reason I am asking is that the motor was professionally overhauled last year to the tune of $1500. The fellow I bought it from (who is in NewZeland right now) could not find the bill but seems to think that the pump was changed as part of that process. I would think that a pro would change that out also.

It is too early here yet for the boat shops to be open. I am going down to get another impeller, I just thought with the vast amount of Knowledge on this site, somone would have thought up an easy test to check pump oporation without dismantalling the bottom end.

By the way...:D any Idea what the impeller part # is

Never believe what a seller tells you, if they don't have the paperwork then chances are they are lieing, who knows..... but I would change that impeller before running the motor again.

Good luck

Re: Johnson Boys Need Your Help

Actually with a little help from some members on the site and my own years behind a wrench...i dropped he bottom end, found that the entire pump had been changed...put it back together and it is running on the muffs right now.

The original problem was just a massive brain fart. My last boat was a Mercrusiser 140 and with the muffs on I would just have to turn the water on slightly. For whatever reason with this 135 I need the water on full bore and it pumps like a banshee...

Anyway problem solved..eveything is back together and I move on to the next chore on this restoration.

Thanks for all that responded....it is great that we have a sorce like this to help others out.
