johnson cable (travel distance)

Just wondering if there is a specific travel distance that a set of johnson controls should move through its full range. The reason I ask is that I have a johnson 50 hp that I just put a new lower unit on and now the controls are not working properly. I am fairly sure that the shift rod is the same length as the old one. I mean how much difference can there be between the two. I assume they are sold in differnt lengths for the 15" and 20" transom. So unless my old one and my new one are 5" difference, they should be the same part, correct? My cable is adjusted so that you barely move the control forward and it is in forward gear(really touchy) but when I move the control to reverse, it is like the cable is not pushing the linkage far enough. It just sits there and lightly grinds, like it is wanting to go that extra little bit, but cant. Also it is like the motor tries to start accelerating before it goes into reverse ( if it goes in). I am confused, do I need new cables, or is there something wrong in my control box. previously it worked, but I will say that the cables are a little stiff, can I lube it with anything to help?

Re: johnson cable (travel distance)

this is the if. if you shift rod is set to the right length, you should be able to shift it manually, and it works. how old are the cables? the have a tendency to to go bad inside. forward is a pulling motion on the cable. reverse is a pushing motion, if the cable is going bad, the strands inside will bunch up and not push the shifter on the motor, all they way.
