Re: Johnson CD 11....

I've used a snippet of 5/16" fuel line as an improvised cowling bumper on those.

Fuel mix - 24:1 using TCW3 rated oil and regular 87 octane gasoline.

I'd start with a bit of oil in the cylinders, followed by a compression check. A waterpump impeller and an inspection of all hoses and ignition components is a good next step in getting it going again. Check the "Awakening" post in the FAQs...

CD-11 uses Champion J6C plugs gapped at .030".

Magneto points set at .020".

Re: Johnson CD 11....

I did pull the plugs, they looked real good, hoses look good(the old style 2 line tank) cleaned the fuel bowl, changed the lower end lube, shortened and resecured the pull rope, the tank pressured right up and the motor started on about the 4th pull........water output looked good so I put the boat in the water and went for a ride. It ran very good though the high speed adjustment is loose. Stopped to fish for 15-20 minutes, motor started on one pull. The water never got too hot to keep my hand in it, I think it is a good motor. This motor is mounted on springs and the front panel is also mounted on springs...seems to be a good suspension system, no vibration thru the tiller handle.......it did develop a miss on the way back.....new plugs maybe?

Now that was a great deal for $25. Plan to change the impeller in the near future as a maintenance item. The plugs should just clean right up. Check the LU oil to see if any water got in after your run as if not then you have a tight LU. And the miss is probably stuff in the carb from sitting... A carb rebuild in the future might help it out... Put some seafoam in the tank to keep the carb clean also... BTW, I have 2 CD-11's :)

For the miss, check the ignition. Check for cracked coils. If the condensers have fiber type caps, replace them. Check the point gap - .020". If the points are burned, replace them. Any one of those could cause your miss and it's quite easy to inspect as that motor has a thin aluminum plate on top of the flywheel that can be removed to look inside...

And replace that impeller! They cost less than $20.00 and are well worth the peace of mind! Impellers are not one of those items that "if it works it'll stay working". They age poorly...

Re: Johnson CD 11....

Samo..I do have water in the LU...I will replace the prop seal.....anything else that would allow water in ? The seal that is there now is brass/rubber...is that original? Chinewalker, I am going to pull the top and look at the ignition too.
Best place to get new impellor, shaft seal, and ignition parts?

Re: Johnson CD 11....

If you re doing the LU seals, do em all (there's only 3 and also the 2 screw washers). Especially get the shifter seal...

Okay...the prop seal is easy...shifter shaft seal? Is it held in by a little screw that can be seen up in the housing? and the third seal?

Re: Johnson CD 11....

I haven't for my cd-11 apart yet but assuming it's the same as my '61 then there's the driveshaft seal under the water pump, the prop shaft seal and the O ring around the shifter. Search this site on how to make a real simple tool to get the shifter seal out. And then there's the spaghetti seal around the skeg.

Re: Johnson CD 11....

That lower has several seals. There is the prop shaft seal, drive shaft seal (under impeller housing), shift shaft seal (o-ring under a brass bushing), vent/drain screw seals and the spaghetti seal between the lower unit and skeg. The lower unit may also have a shift cradle retaining screw (phillips head) located on the skeg portion.

The shift shaft seal can be a pain. I've used two different methods to replace them. One is to run a tap through the bushing, thread a bolt into it and pull it out with a hammer/puller or placing the bolt through a piece of wood resting across the lower unit and let the threading action pull it out. The second method was to pound it out from underneith using a long piece of 5/16" iron rod ground down to 1/4". Both methods work fine.
