johnson control box

hi all,<br /> i have a control box from a 79' 100 hp johnson. i removed it from the boat and removed all of the odvious screws that hold both halves together but, i still can't get it open! i need to get it open to change the key switch. any tricks of the trade that i am lacking? thanks in advance!<br /><br />likearock

It has been a while since I split mine, horn needed to be replaced. Mine is the black model, not white metal. I believe there are the 3 or 4 obvious screws, you may have to take the screw out that holds the shifter from the opposite side. May be a screw around the dead man switch?? Try to get a screwdrive between the two halves in a inconspicuous spot (bottom) and gently pry. The black case is plastic. Every thing is packed like a can of sardines so be careful not to pinch wires during assembly

I just split mine last week.....I have the white metal box. Just pry a screwdriver in between the two halves. You'll need to apply pressure at two opposing points (i.e., top and bottom, or front and back) or else it'll just keep alternating which side is open. Good luck.

thanks, i will give it another try this weekend! by the way mine is the white box.i had gotten the allen screw out that held the shift lever and the other housing bolts but, was scared to pry to had in fear of breaking something.maybe i'll have better luck this weekend!<br /> likearock
