Would a 98 Johnson 88 horsepower (http://annarbor.craigslist.org/boa/3129892999.html) like this, work on a 94 115 crossflow lower unit? I know the bubble back would have to be moved over and the carbs to make it the 115. Its just like this one, just the lower unit is bad but the power head is good. (Not my headache this time just a friends but figured I would ask. )
Thanks

So just to clarify, you have a 94 115 with a bad lower unit and you want to know if you can swap some powerhead parts from the 115 onto the 88 to increase the power output of the 88 up to 115hp?
If this is the case, wouldnt it be easier to simply put the lower unit from the 88 onto the 115? FWIW, that 88 looks like a nice and clean motor, I wouldnt mess with it if it were mine.

No, I would swap the 115 lower unit onto it because the 88hp lower unit is bad. wanted to know if a 98 year 88hp was even a crossflow, and if it was the same. I know from like 79 to the early 90s they were pretty much identical.

I am not sure on the lower unit but...... if you swap the bubble back housing and carbs........ you have some machine work ahead. The bubble back exhaust housing bolts to a head that has machine cuts (Yes it will require a milling machine) to match the cuts under the bubble ;)

Okay, now I understand, I was just a little confused because of your comments about swapping carbs and bubble back exhaust. So your question is simply whether or not a lower unit from a 1994 115 hp will work on a 1998 88 hp.
The lower unit interchange list in the top secret file says that 88-140.............(crossflow 13 spline prop shaft)..............1992-1998 are a direct bolt on. Looks like you are good to go.

Re: Johnson Crossflow changeovers

Your craigs list ad is incorrect. OMC did not make an 88 hp crossflow engine in 1998. Last year for the 88 was 1996. If the owner can't get the year correct, what other information does he have that is incorrect?

Add was an example more over. I just wanted to be sure the newer 88 would bolt up to an older 115. Thanks guys!
