johnson drain plug problem

trying to change my lower end oil,but cant get the dam drain plug off, ive tried a big screwdriver with a ratchet wrench on it with lots of pressure,spraying the crap out of it ,ratchet impact (screwdriver)

still wont budge and the drain plug is starting to lose the grove for the flatblade..

was thinking about heating it up a little bit with a heat gun??
any objectives there? or ANY other ideas?? this is driving me up a wall !!!!

any help would be great thanks in advance

Also, once you get it (them) out, I have read a few posts about people that have replaced the the slotted screw with a hex-head... The kind you use an Allen Wrench with. A search might turn up that thread. I thought it was a pretty good idea, as long as you can get the part in stainless, use the right O-ring, and the head does not get gummed up. Always meant to ask about that in the other thread... I'll see if I can find it.

You probably didn't strike it hard enough or you had it set to tighten rather than loosen. If the motor is a small one, you may have to buck the LU to be effective. I've never had to use a different tool, if a screw driver didn't work.

thanks eric.. if you do please let me know. I dont who invented this slot style drain plug stupid in my mind..

i know it was on loosen and possibly didnt hit it hard enough but believe the bottom case is white steel and i know its not the toughest so i didnt wanna crack or screw it up, but guess i should just grow a set and get a bigger hammer hahaha..

maiden voyage is 2moro early a.m so think i might just top it of so i know i got plenty of oil and worry about it this winter when its snowmobiling time, worst case is an easy-out then flush all the chips through but really dont wanna if i dont have to.. but the slot is starting to go away so might have to do that. again thanks for your help and advice guys !

Gearcase is cast aluminum. I wouldn't use an EZ out, BC they mostly break and make the situation worse. Sounds like the screw slot has been buggered up, which makes it a challenge. Sometimes a punch driven tangentially will cause the screw to loosen.

good news boys !!! good ole pops went to the house for me and got it out while im at work.. appreciate all the help tho, deff changing that plug now.. also a heads up im a parts/service manager at a trailer shop so if u have any problems/questions with your trailers let me know and id be glad to help ya out !!! thanks again

said he tapped it !! is all he said honestly.. ive been tapping that thing for 3 days !!!!! hahaa i really dont care its off and now ill feel confident and have a buddy heading to the local marina as i type to get some new drain plugs and they changed them to a hex style ( allen head).. BOUT TIME! THANKS AGAIN

Funny... I had a stuck seat post that I had be oiling and tapping for three weeks... Finally took a 2x4 and good length of rope... Coiled the rope around the post and used the 2x4 for leverage. Finally got it to come free.

BTW, tried finding that thread, but couldn't. I'm just not hitting the right keywords I guess.
