Johnson Electrical Question

Just bought a used (really used) pontoon boat with a 1972 25 hp Johnson motor on it. Model #25EL72R Serial #E3613138<br />I always thought that these motors were equipped with a stator that would at least put a bit of a trickle charge back into the battery after the motor was started. Since the pontoon boat does not have lights, I want to at least put navigation and anchor lights on it. Talking with a neighbor, he tells me that absolutely no charge goes back to the battery. When the starter cranks the battery dead, you have to charge it. Is this true?<br />Thanks in advance

Welcome to iboats, Mr Akers!<br /><br />I don't belive they offered a charger on the 25hp until 1973. If your battery voltage stays below 13v when the engine is running, there's no charging going on.<br /><br />A 50 amp-hour battery will likely keep your running ligths going all night.<br />EDIT: You should get a larger battery than that though.

Thanks for the info -- even though it is bad news -- I guess it is my luck that I missed it by one year. I have a question about LED lights, but maybe I should post to a different forum.<br />James
