Our main boat is a Dell Quay Dory 13 with a 30hp 2 stroke Evinrude. This motor behaves fairly well, floods every now and then........any reason? The most grief comes from Safety 2. Same hull type, this time with a Johnson Sea Horse 25hp. Firstly, I'm not sure of the immersion angle, performance Isn't too good and the exhaust often takes a dunking in rough weather. Also, sometimes, when the motor is put into ahead from neutral the engine will rev but the boat will not move. However, lots of turbulance is produced around the prop. If you engage astern then ahead, the problem is sorted. I suspect the drive shaft is slipping but, I'm far from expert. Any help will be appreciated. Many Thanks

Sounds like a spun hub in the prop. I'm sure there is a place near you that can rebuild it. By the way, welcome to iboats.

I doubt it's a spun hub, it wouldn't slip and then fix itself after reverse, it would continue to slip and it would slip worse at higher speeds, you might have a problem in the lower unit.

are you running in a weedy area? That's exactly what happens if you collect weeds on the prop... you can rev in reverse to clean 'em off and away you go.

As for the 30hp, maybe the needle valve isn't closing well (worn valve or bad float)... this could cause flooding problems.

good luck

Hi LDSA Bosun

The 25 HP sounds like its mounted a tad too high on transom. If you have extra load in front of boat, maybe its ventilating ( pulling air down from surface ) That can be the reson you hear the exhaust now and then in rough weather - they are known for that thoug, the 25 HP´s up to 1988 had seperat exhaust, instead if thru-hub. Take a look if the antiventilation plate is in line with bottom of hull, hold something straight against hull and aim against motor. Antiventilation plate is the biggest plate on lower unit, just above propeller.

good point mmcpeck. I guess I missed that part of the thread. BF and G Dane have two very good points. You need to have the trim set right for max performance.

The trim's always been a little suspect on the 25. I'm down at the club tomorrow evening so will investigate suggestions so far (thankyou!) and try and obtain some serial numbers and dates for you guys. The immersion angle seems really silly on the 25 come to think of it. The motor's tilted a long way back....antiventilation plate, will do, thanks again

Oh, by the way BF, good thinking about the weed, I had that exact problem for the first time whilst operating on saturday(I thought it was the clutch slipping!!) However, we lift the motors after every use, its not that simple unfortunatly!

Re: Johnson/Evinrude motor blues

Hiya Guys, I checked out your reccomendations yesterday, the 25's almost certainly ventilating. We'll be removing the motors shortly for wintering, I'll make sure the trim angle get's set correctly! I'll check out the ball floats in the carbs as well, the symptoms fit both motors, Thanks Again, LDSA Bosun
