Hi everyone! so whoo hoo , It's a 1955 25 horse seahorse, so my question now is and bare with me i am a newbie, is how do I go about changing the lower half oil and what kind do i use , you see my manual has not arrived yet and i am ready to get out on the lake, so.... i figured new plugs and lower section oil could help a bit. i can see the screw that says oil fill but where do i drain out the old? and do i put in the new via a funnel, it sounded real quiet when i tried it out in the garbage can full of water is that a good sign? first boat first motor
Thanks for any help
Fleur

Hi, Fleur.

There are two slot type screws in your lower end. The bottom one is used to drain and to fill. The top one is an air vent for draining and filling.

Remove both to drain.

Add new grease through BOTTOM hole until upper hole leaks grease.

Put the upper screw back in. Air lock will hold long enough to install lower screw.

Good luck. :)

Fleur,

The container that the lower unit oil comes in will be threaded, so you thread it into the bottom drain hole and squeeze or pump it into the lower unit until oil comes out the top (vent) hole.
They also make a hose adapter which is very handy. If you ever use one you'll never change the oil any other way.

TRP251

Re: Johnson fired up after two pulls

As JB & Trooper 251 say, the bottom one is the fill hole. When you purchase the oil/grease you'll find it has a top that when cut would fit the filler hole and prevent any leaks. The idea being to inject the oil/grease into that lower hole till it starts to come out the top one, thus you'll know it's full.
Otherwise if you pour it into the upper hole it'll appear full when in fact there'd be a lot of air in there.
Be sure and do it right the first time. It's a whole lot cheaper than repairs!
Ross

Don't know about NAPA. I'd go to my friendly boat & motor dealer and ask for lower unit lube.

c/6

Hooty

Fleur: I know with your first Boat & Motor your in a hurry to get out on the water but don't just buy any gear lube. Make sure it is marine gear lube. The automotive type tends to foam up quite a bit. Happy Boating, Hal

at one point you talk of "hyper" oil.i believe what you actually mean is "hypoid" gear oil.

Fleur,

In that engine, you can use 90 weight "hypoid" gear oil. You can find the marine stuff at Wal Mart and other large chain stores.

I would get some new drain/fill screw gaskets before you do this. Any Johnson/Evinrude boat dealer will have them and you can get a handful for a couple of $$$. Replace them whenever you change the fluid, which should be seasonally. Best to drain and refill before winter storage.

Your engine will run fine on regular 90w hypoid from any auto suppy store. Back then that was what they used...I ran them this way for many hours and years in the 50s & 60s without gear problems. That 25 is a good one.

Re: Johnson fired up after two pulls

hey BillP thanks a lot , I did get the marine stuff it said 80- 90 lower unit lube
anyway what a mess, the threads you guys talked about on the container of oil going in the bottom fill hole did not work, they don't fit this motor so. needless to say most the oil ran back out just as I thought it might all over my hand, so i tried it again and did manage to get some of the oil in it but still did not see it come through the top fill hole. so i tried to get some down the fill hole at the top and I may have suceeded, now what? I don't know if there is air or enough or anything.

Re: Johnson fired up after two pulls

Fleur, some will always run out the bottom. Usually not much. Here is a tip from the repair manual for my motor.
You can always take the top screw out and use a paper clip to check the gear oil level. If it is low at all, then pour some of your Hypoid oil in one of those trigger pump oiling cans. This will allow you to shoot a small stream in the top hole without making a huge bubble. Let it settle so any possible air bubbles come out, then check with a paperclip again to make sure it is full.
You got the right oil. Remember, never use automobile gear oil in the lower unit. It foams and marine gearcases are not made with enough room to accomodate the oil. Again, from my repair manual. -Scoop

You can get a pump that will fit your lube container (gallon or quart size), it should be next to the gear lube. They run about 6 bucks. Fluer it is best to fill from the bottom and with the pump you just need to press it tightly into the bottom opening, be careful as to much pumping will squirt lube out the vent plug. You can get this at most auto supply stores and even at Wallyworld. I have found it much faster and neater to do it this way.
