I just got back from looking at a outboard for sell. The guy said it was a 6hp Johnson and it said that much on the hood. He also said it was an early 80's. I just wanted some clairification. The model # is 6R-72D. S/N J3547013. Also it says that it is a 50th aniversary. Does that really mean anything?
Thank You, Greg

It is VERY early eighties, about 8 years early. 1972.

Re: Johnson ID info

If it is clean and runs do you see anything wrong with it if the price is right. The other option is a newer Nissan 5hp. The nissan is newer and I think that it had a electronic ign. not points. But cosmeticly the nissan is in worse shape and the fin that drops down below the foot is half broken. I do not know how much newer the nissan is because the tag was missing on it. But I am figuring it as being newer because of the ing. not being points. Also the nissan had a new carb and fuel pump. Both motors are the same price. Very reasonable.
Let me know what you think.

What TD said.

Being a few years older is meaningless when it is one of the truly great outboards ever.

When I went to that sight I typed in 6hp then it is asking if the motor is a 6202D or a 6203D. What is the diference?

I'm pretty sure that 6202D is a standard 15" shaft length, where 6203D is a long shaft (20"). On the Evinrude site the exhaust housing that is shown for each model is the same, but on the 6203 they fail to show the 5" extension housing. Probably if you check, the shift rod, water tubes and drive shaft probably have different part #s for the 6202 vs. 6203. In actual fact the long & short shaft 6s share the same outer exhaust housing, but the long shaft version uses a separate 5" extention that goes between the flange on the exhaust housing and the flange on the lower unit.

See the picture below to see the type of extension I'm speaking of (shown on a 1970 Evinrude 9?)

Re: Johnson ID info

Long shaft would have been 6RL-72D.

Good luck. That is a fine, fine li'l engine. :)
