I have a 1993 johnson 40hp (TJ40ELETB) and I noticed that the idle jets have two different numbers stamped on them. The top carb has 33 stamped on it and the bottom jet has 35. Shouldnt they be the same number jets? Thanks in advance......

Re: johnson idle jets

check parts break down on evinrude.com
Jets are usually the same but someone may have changed them for some reason.
If motor is working properly why worry?

Re: johnson idle jets

I just got the boat and the motor is running rough. Im getting ready to rebuild the carbs and was wanting to know if i need to install different jets back if they have been changed. I checked evinrude.com all I get there is a part number not a jet size.

According to the site, 20inch model motors have 33 in the upper carb and 35 in the lower carb so your setup is correct if it's a 20 inch model, these are early production carbs.

Ok guys I rebuilt the carbs yesterday and they are still running very rich at idle. Pull the plugs and they are wet. Float is set level like manual says and the carbs are clean. What could be causing this problem????? Help Please....

Did you pull the orifice plugs out when cleaning the carb? Did you spray out all the passages very well with at least 120PSI?

Sounds like you still have a bit of junk in your idle passage. I had a very similar situation with my 89 20HP Johnson just a few days ago.

Did you count how many turns from what it was set at to turn it in snug and set back to where it was?

Good luck
