Johnson idle trouble

I have a 78 model 140 hp Johnson outboard. When I raise the fast idle lever for initial startup and the return the lever to operating position it does not return to the rubber stop on the linkage arm which in turn causes me to idle to high. If I go under to cowl I can manually push the arm back where it should be, but that's is aggravating to have to do while on the water. Any suggestions. Thanks and God Bless

Simple. Adjust the plastic nut on the throttle cable (at-motor end).

Fixed yet?

Does the remote lever move when you go under the cowl and manually adjust the arm? Maybe the nylon adjustment nut is not secured at the motor, or there is some other slippage. If you have the old style cables, the wire may be slipping in the connector -- requires tightening the screws that clamp the wire in place.

If adjusting the nylon nut, disconnect the remote cable at the motor and adjust the throttle arm, then replace the connector at that spot. (i.e., Adjust the motor, then the cable.)
