I have a small water leak, I cant tell if it is on the gasket side or block side of the upper head, it seems to run fine, should I worry about overheating??
I know there is an alarm in the command center(throttle box) but I dont want to ever hear it, is there a way to hook up a temp guage???

You may have a water leak from either the head gasket or the head cover gasket. Neither should be a fatal problem. If the leak is between the head and the block, you may be able to retorque the head and see if it stops. I'd probably try to get the leak stopped. On that engine, it's pretty easy to remove that head and replace the head gasket.

Sweet, thanx got gaskets on order, if Im doing 1 side might as well do both, really need a temp guage, not sure where to mount it, in the water, or on the block

Though rare, a crack in that location is not unusual. May have been water in the powerhead over the winter and it froze, causing the crack. Since it is the outer part of the block, it is repairable. You will have to pull the powerhead and have it welded by a shop that does aluminum welding. It should still give you many good hours of service.

Re: Johnson javelin 1977

That is definately the way to go, as of yesterday I put some jb weld on it, it is a very small leak, so I could assume that water is getting in there, If that holds I could consider it a band aid.. will install temp thermocouples to see how hot it runs...not sure about operating temp...got a water pump kit on order...Safe to say for every hour on the water=2 hours of maintanance..

thanx for the advice....

Re: Johnson javelin 1977

It seems the jb weld did some good on the water leak, instead of spewing out
it now just drips, Ill have to wait awhile considering the head gaskets are $50 a piece before I remove the head again, It seems to run fine out of the water. put a thermocouple on the block & ran it for about 20 min. temp. range was 120-128. turn the motor off and she climbs to about 135.. shes going on the water this week-end, will see if theres a difference...
