My motor is ready to be fired up. Before I trailer it to the water, I'd like to start it up in the driveway. Last time it was a hairy project involving a giant trash bin full of water and a box for it to stand on because it wasn't tall enough. Then trying to empty it so I could pull it out from underneath the propeller...well, needless to say it was comical. And wet. Can I get a pair of those little motor muffs and hook it up to a hose? I used to use them on another motor I used to have, but I'm not sure I can use them on this one. Thanks!!!

Well, the answer to your question is sort of.

Can you use the muffs that you currently have? NO

Can you use muffs? Yes

Are you likely to find these aforementioned muffs? NO

They are rare. Made by Tempo back in the day. Every now and then they show up on Ebay, but not very often. I think F_R has some, but not likely he would sell them.

Got it! It's a flushing kit - no muffs involved. Soooo now it says to hook the part with the female end of the hose attachment over the water intake and secure it with the bracket onto the cavitation plate.
Is the water intake that long "tube" that runs on a diagonal by the propeller? And cavitation plate...is that the flat oval above the propeller? This little gizmo is very cool, but I can't figure out if it goes on frontwards, backwards...help will cut so many hours off my puzzlement. Thanks!

Hi Chris - I'm trying to be an adult and find this out on my own, but either I'm not googling the right language or I'm blind. Either way, I can't figure this out. I think I have it, and then the coil spring flies off, or it seems really sloppy. I know I've got it surrounded, but still...I know if I hook up the hose it's going to be a disaster. If you've got a pic, that would be awesome. Thank you from the bottom of my frustrated heart!

Argh! Took a bit of work to get it strapped on like you show, but I got it. It's still doing the same thing - it won't turn over. Then I ran the battery down, had to hook it up to my little jumper so that got it But it just runs and runs, and it won't fire up. Same thing it was doing when I got it in the water, and I don't know what's wrong. I have a friend who works on motors coming over to help.

Re: Johnson Javelin RJE-18 muffs?

Update! There was water in the gas tank. We cleaned out the tank, and the gasket at the top of the can is completely rotted off. He thinks that might be why it's not drawing enough gas to stay running. He also said to get a new tank with a bulb, but I read on another post those don't work with these old motors. Is that true?
The battery was DEAD even though it's new, so it's on a trickle charge overnight. I have a power starter we used to get it going to test start the motor.
He thinks the water pump might be shot because he wasn't satisfied with how much water came out the hole when it was hooked up to the flushing kit. Water goes all over the place! It does come out those little holes in a row by the propeller, but not out of the bigger hole further up. It just dribbles out of that one.
BUT we were able to get the motor started (yay!!!), but didn't run it for more than a few seconds.
Is it hard to find a gasket for the gas tank? And the water pump - is there a better test for if it's working? Thank you for your support and help - if it weren't for you guys here I would be lost.

Re: Johnson Javelin RJE-18 muffs?

Well to start, running it on muffs is not a valid test by any means that the impeller is working, as you are bypassing the pump, FORCING the cooling water through the circuit from the pressure supplied by the hose. Regardless, you should have been getting cooling water exiting at the exhaust relief port while on the muffs. There may be a blockage in the cooling circuit. You will have to drop the gearcase, and should replace the impeller while you are at it.

Regarding the fuel issue, you can use a newer style single line tank and bulb, IF you convert it to a fuel pump. It is a give and take situation. You can also order rebuild kits for your current double line tank from sites like ebay or laingsoutboards.com to name 2.
