Evening all. I have a COUNTER ROTATING 1996 Johnson 225 Ocean Runner. I recently ran into some debris in the bay and damaged my lower unit. After inspection, I found that the "clutch shaft" and the "pinion gear" are the only parts damaged (along with the housing). Does anyone know where I can find these parts for my lower unit instead of having to buy a full gear set in order to get just the pinion gear? Maybe someone out there has these parts laying around? Hopefully someone can help.

Ryan...I edited your post....solicitation to buy or sell is forbidden on the forums. You can post a want ad in the iboats classifieds. Thanks.

Ryan

If something happened to the pinion gear it'd be kinda odd that the forward and reverse gear is still OK. I'd look at them real close.

Re: Johnson lower unit parts...

This is a single engine application. I bought the motor from a friend who had twins on his boat. The pinion gear had 2 or 3 teeth broken off of it. The forward and reverse gears appear to be fine. I am thinking the initial jar of the gears when I struck the debris is the reason why the pinion gear broke and the teeth spun off the clutch shaft. If I were to convert the unit to standard rotation, wouldn't all I need to buy would be a standard gear set and prop shaft? The drive shaft, bearing carrier, and bearing housing should all be the same?

The bearing carrier is different too. As well as the shift parts. About the only thing you reuse is the case (if its a true 96) and the driveshafts. Some washers and bearings but not many.

The pinion is on the lower driveshaft not the clutch shaft. What do you mean when you say the teeth spun off the clutch shaft?

Both the pinion gear and the clutch shaft were damaged. A couple gears or teeth, whatever you want to call them, were broken off of the pinion gear, but the driveshaft was not damaged. The splines on the end of the clutch shaft, where it enters the forward gear, are all broken and shifted.

Ah, the splines. Makes sense.

Heres an option for you, just in case youre looking at options. Pro Marine (Bradenton) has new complete units. You might ask your dealer to contact them to see if its feesable. Naturally you'd have to change props.
