Is the Seloc manuals that cover a wide range of outboards good enough to use for carb work? I'll get one soon. This Johnson is new to me and I am leary as I was when I first got the old Merc. A manual from the libray got me through that but they do not currently have the one that I need for this motor. I do not want to tear this thing apart without knowing a little anyway. I need to take the carb off as I would like to at least take it apart and clean it. I have done a few of these. Motor has not been run in about 15 years. I started it, the water pump does work but idle and anything above that is very rough. Can someone give details on removal, especially the lean/rich knob. Does is just slide off to the front? And it looks the inner nut could be a bear to get to. I need some help here. Anyone??

Re: Johnson manual

Seloc manuals are very "generic" and generalized. I've got a bunch of 'em and rarely use them at all. If you have a basic understanding of your outboard, the Seloc will probably get you through but, the motor has not been run for 15 years so, it'll need some TLC. If you plan on keeping your motor, I'd spend the money on a service manual specific to the year and horsepower. You'll be glad you did. Sometimes (if you're patient) you can get a used one on Ebay. That's a great motor you have. Not a "man killer" and plenty of punch for everyday use. I have a 1988 15 hp and it's my best motor by far for all around use.

Oh, I plan on keeping it. I peeked in where the carb is and you can see what looks like gummed up gas. I'm sure it needs carb work. To get the lean/rich knob off, does it just slide off toward the front? Help with this and I can go mess with it. Its snowing and Im bored. I do not want to break that knob.

Look on youtube. There are lots of videos on how to rebuild carbs.

It would really help you if you post your outboards model number, some guys here can find almost any factory manual on ebay, they know the best sellers.
Or try this link, its more expensive though.

Seloc is useless, and clymer too, both are a waste of good money.
When I got the factory book I gave my seloc away.
