I'm enclosing a couple of pics of my Mile-Master fuel tank. I had run a thread on here a few weeks back on my Johnson 18 HP motor and got some great info from you folks, and I thoroughly appreciate it. My question is: I was told that after putting the fuel mix in the tank, that I had to pump the tank, but I cannot find a pump on the tank. Also, the fuel lines have rotted and I'm wondering which line hooks up to where on the motor. Any help in this would certainly be appreciated.

NOTE: The pics I was going to send are almost 2 megs each...I tried to downsize them but cannot get them small enough to go on here. I would also appreciate any help on this that you can offer. Thanks.....Jim

If it's a 2-line pressure tank there should be a small black primer button on top of the tank. There are two lines - one for air and one for fuel. This should be marked on both the tank and the connector which attaches to the motor.

There should be a little button on the tank near where the hoses connect for the pump. Push it a couple times.

Air connects to a port in the lower, front, port side of motor, near the carb. Fuel goes into the fuel filter then out to the bottom of the carb. My filter has arrows to show what way the fuel flows.

My thanks to Joe Reeves for downsizing the tank pics for me. I found another pic of the tank in another thread, and it seems that the knob is missing from my tank and the pump seems to be frozen. I have sprayed it with penetrating oil. I'm enclosing the pics so if anyone can verify that the knobs is missing and maybe tell me what to do if the pump is frozen, I would certainly appreciate it.

I'm still having a problem with one of the photos, it is still a bit too large. I'm sending one of the photos plus a pic of the tank photo I found in another thread for comparison.

The unpainted tank on the left is missing the primer knob, and the shaft could well be rusted. Before going to far, see how much rust is in the tank. Some of these old tank's can be a mess. If this tank can be repaired, you need the diaphram with the hole in it for the primer stem. The primer pump's fuel, not air by the way. If you replace the hose, go to an outo store, and take the motor end fuel connector with you. Buy the braided rubber hose that is a snug fit on the hose barbs' hold the two hoses' together with small tye straps for neatness. I would not trust any molded, double line hose available today. Leave the fill cap closed with the tank under pressure, and you could have a boat full of gas, or worse yet, a garage, or basement.

Re: Johnson Mile-Master Fuel Tank

I want to really thank you folks for your help, the info has been awesome!!!! My Johnson 18HP is in really great mechanical shape, I'm the second owner. Now with all the info I've gotten from this and a previous thread, we can safely crank it. I figured there was more to it than just hooking lines to it. The guy who is helping me is a good mechanic, but doesn't know his boat motors. The tank has no rust inside as far as I can tell. It had some old gas in it, I put some new gas in it, along with some injection additive. It has been soaking for around a week, so I'll find out when I drain it.

Again, I thank you all. I live near Morehead City, NC, in case someone in the area may be looking for a Johnson....by the way, it's a '57.

Are you looking to sell your engine? I'm looking for a '57 Johnson 18.

I'm definitely going to sell the engine after I get it cranked, want to make sure it's OK. I not only have the tank, but also have the original controls for the outboard. I think the controls are frozen, may need some new cables on it. If interested, email me at: bluesman1a2a3a@yahoo.com. I will take some pics of the motor to send to you....thanks, Jim
